So last year masterpiece Tumbbad was released. And just like any other good films, this also failed to attract the audience to the theater despite being one of the best movies of 2018.
There are a couple of scenes that take our breath away. All the rain scenes are real. All thee shots were filmed over 4 monsoons. Yes, the director wanted to make the movie as realistic as possible so the crew would wait for the clouds to come. The grandmother is no CGI or green-screen but the heavy prosthetic with makeup was used on this kid. It would take 6–7 hrs just to put on this makeup. One can only imagine his patience, dedication for the role. Pure genius!Womb of Goddess: The womb of the goddess where Hastar and money were hidden was also not a green screen. Instead, they built a real 7000 sq.ft womb. Since it is a womb it has to be realistic with everything. The set was made from scratch. The red blood was made from different chemicals. But the layers of material on which womb was created, would suck all the blood after sometimes so they had to wet the entire womb again just to keep it alive. It’s pity that the film that took 8 years to complete just so it could be as realistic as possible was badly ignored by the typical Indian audience. Fun fact: The movie was dubbed about 4 times since the original voice records were masked due to the sound of rain. Also, the voices of the kids were changed over a period of 8 years. So they had a hard time synchronizing it properly. Kudos to the team of Tumbbad for their dedication and patience. Walt Disney Pictures is a struggling, backwater movie studio when a visionary filmmaker comes along and pitched his script.
The movie they end up producing is TRON -
in a time when one of the world’s fastest computers can barely generate two megabytes of RAM.
When TRON comes out two years later, the event will be the moon landing moment for Hollywood’s animation industry, blazing a trail for Jurassic Park and Toy Story. While much of the story was set in cyberspace, it featured only 15 -20 minutes of 3D animation, requiring the computing power of four IT vendors to generate. One of the segments is the iconic light cycle race. For the whites to stand out, high contrast black-and-white film was used. During post-production, each frame was photographed one by one to trace out the whites via a tedious process called rotoscoping. Traced copies were then inked and painted frame-by-frame, which was an incredibly laborious task, and was outsourced to a 2D animation sweatshop in Taiwan. More neon colors = more layers to ink and paint. Finally, each finished frame, overlaid with several painted layers, was ‘backlit’ and photographed again, giving you this: The MCU’s heavy reliance on CGI is well established. At one point, they used a completely digital version of Robert Downey Jr, for the final scene in Iron Man 3.
It’s like Downey Jr said, “Once the mask comes down, I’m not there.”
Memorable Sequence in The Very Same Movie
There’s another memorable sequence in the very same movie – the Air Force One rescue scene. Given Marvel’s proclivity for CGI, I’m certain many would have assumed that the sequence was done in front of a green screen. Unfortunately, Steven Spielberg was unable to find an actual Tyrannosaurus to star in this edition of Jurassic Park. And while the movie certainly had some CGI:
In the Lord of the Rings trilogy, there are several regular-sized actors who play the diminutive hobbits. To portray the size difference between the hobbits and other characters, the filmmakers decided to utilize old-school forced-perspective techniques that were developed in the 1920s.
Take a look at this scene from Fellowship of the Ring, featuring Merry and Gandalf looking at each other. It looks real because it is real. But what it shows is not what it seems.
